Locker Services
In this blog post, we provide an overview of the process for setting up a parcel locker network using Lockex software. We understand that every customer and application of smart lockers is unique. To keep things straightforward, let’s assume you are a logistics or CEP company looking to establish a parcel delivery network and have already secured a hardware supplier for your lockers.
Step 1: Hardware Compatibility
The first step is evaluating the hardware components of your parcel lockers to ensure seamless integration. Standard lockers with PCs and screens typically include components such as lock controllers, barcode scanners, printers, shock sensors, and POS terminals. For any new hardware, we request that you provide a device for testing.
For autonomous, off-grid lockers, a test kit containing the “brains” of the locker usually suffices. Our team takes responsibility for integrating the hardware to guarantee full compatibility with our software.
Step 2: Choosing Locker Services
Lockex offers a wide range of services for parcel lockers. Below is a summary of these services, which can be customized to suit your business needs:
Parcel Collection
Customers collect parcels by entering a collection code or scanning a QR code. A Cash On Delivery (COD) option is available, requiring successful payment via a POS terminal or a Pay-by-Link solution before collection.
Parcel Drop-Off
This service allows customers to drop off parcels by entering a code, scanning a QR code, or using a barcode. If the compartment is too small, customers can request a larger one, with an additional payment option available if needed. Label printing at the locker is also supported.
Parcel Returns
This service works similarly to parcel drop-off but includes criteria like verifying that the return period hasn’t expired.
Parcel Shipping
Customers can prepare parcels for shipping directly at the locker with multiple delivery options:
Locker to locker
Locker to a pick-up point (e.g., post office)
Locker to a domestic or international address
Locker to a third-party locker or PUDO network
Shipping typically requires a POS terminal and label printer for processing payments and printing labels.
Storage Service
Temporary storage is available for items placed in lockers, with pricing based on the planned storage duration. Customers receive SMS or email notifications with collection details. Overages are handled via additional payment options.
Exchange Service
Similar to storage, this service enables item exchanges between individuals, such as documents or keys.
User Interface Customization
We ensure that the locker interface aligns with your branding. Lockex offers extensive UI customization, allowing you to modify colors, fonts, icons, graphics, and user flows. Our team works closely with you to deliver a user-friendly and visually cohesive experience.
Handling Notifications
Most customers prefer managing notifications themselves. If your system already handles SMS, email, or other notifications, locker-related updates can be integrated through webhooks. These webhooks provide real-time events, such as parcel collection details, storage deadlines, and COD amounts.
Alternatively, Lockex can manage notifications for you, including message templates and customization.
System Integration
Lockex offers a comprehensive REST API for seamless integration, allowing you to:
Register shipments
Access locker availability and status
Reserve compartments
Edit parcel details
Retrieve analytic reports for business insights
If additional features are needed, we can rapidly develop custom APIs to meet your requirements.
Some services, such as parcel shipping, may require deeper integration with your systems, including parcel registration, delivery location imports, and label printing. These details are reviewed during the project scoping phase.
Track & Trace
Real-time tracking ensures that your customers stay informed about parcel delivery events. Webhook notifications send updates directly to your system, requiring only a webhook payload URL for setup.
System Configuration
With the foundational work complete, we configure system settings to match your operational needs. These settings include:
Parcel storage duration
Notification schedules for reminders or warnings
Notification template customization (if managed by Lockex)
Supported languages in the locker UI
Locker imports
User group creation and access rights
Network management user imports
Step 3: Rollout and Maintenance
After configuration, we proceed with locker deployment. During the initial months, we provide “hyper-care”, closely monitoring the network and addressing any issues promptly. Once stabilised, the project transitions into a maintenance phase to ensure the network operates seamlessly 24/7.
By following this streamlined process, Lockex ensures a smooth and efficient setup of your parcel locker network, tailored to your business needs. Contact us today and our team will only be happy to get you started on building your locker network.
